Lovers and Friends
Lovers are easy to find,
Whether on mountain high or by the shore,
But true friends are rare,
For they have the quality of forevermore.
Gratifying only for the here and now,
Lovers are passion high, passion spent,
While friends are uniquely steady,
Counting the past as well as the present.
Lovers do not always tell the truth,
For flattery eases and dupes the mind,
But friends tell you what you need to know,
Letting you see rather than be blind.
Lovers— I hope I never do without,
For they nourish my hungry ego,
But friends—whom I couldn’t do without,
Let life’s immeasurable pleasures grow.
But if I’ve a choice to what I want,
I’ll look for a perfect blend,
Not a one-time friendly lover,
But a consistent lover-friend.
