Off to the West Coast and Laying Low

I’m leaving Chicago by early light,
I want to be in L.A. by tomorrow night,
I don’t want anyone to know where I am,
I owe everyone, including Uncle Sam,
I heard it doesn’t rain in downtown L.A.,
So maybe I can hide there and forever stay,
Or drift up the coast to freedom land,
I’ve heard it’s just a little past San Fran.,
I’m tired of the heat and tired of the snow,
So it’s off to the west coast and laying low,
I couldn’t keep a job in Chicagoland,
My girlfriend done left me for another man,
If I could have made a living singing the blues,
I’d have played and danced in my brand new shoes,
But I’m leaving Chicago and I won’t return,
Cause all my luck took a nasty turn,
If I can find a corner where I can sing and dance,
I can make a little money without taking a chance,
The Midwest beat me down so I have to go,
One to make money and two to grow,
I’m off to the west coast and laying low.
