When I was six I was afraid of tarantulas,
but not climbing trees,
I was careful with snakes,
didn’t have what it takes
to keep a snake for long,
but I could climb trees
and talk to a mother skunk
watch an alligator go kerplunk,
into the water.
I was afraid of girls,
but my mom and sisters didn’t count.
but I could ride a pig, even if he was big,
and I could tell scary stories
even when they were true.
I wasn’t afraid of the dark,
but I noticed where the bad men went,
and knew to stay out of their way.
