SPIKED

I did not know what was in the drink
That influenced the party that night,
All I remember is the sudden change
In attitudes before the fight.
One bottle poured into the punch,
Turned the beverage from blue to green,
Without words but angry stares
Brought trouble like you’ve never seen.
Perhaps it was love that caused the fight,
I believe that to be true,
It definitely took place at first sight,
I was surprised it happened to you.
One fist swung was all it took
Before the house came tumbling down,
Broken bottles and chairs lined the room
But you smiled as you lay on the ground.
The commander’s daughter kissed you
Before she left that night,
And the next day you were released,
Happy with love at first sight.
One bottle added to the punch,
Just a little to spike the drink,
But why are you with my girl,
And I’m still locked in the clink?

A GRANDFATHER’S QUESTIONS

A Grandfather’s Questions
Who will clap at the baby’s first laugh,
And help her count the stars?
Who will listen for the dove’s call,
And sniff the fragrant flowers?
Who will encourage a child to grow,
And love her fellowman?
Who will take the time to explain,
To help her understand?
Will she ever learn how to respect,
The young as well as the old?
Will she discover over time
Love is more precious than gold?
Who will chant the songs,
I learned as a child?
Who will tell stories at night,
Of ancestors gone awhile?
Who will sniff and enjoy the taste,
Of Grandmother’s fresh baked bread?
And who will explain the Will of God,
When life is hanging by a thread?
Will someone hug her tightly,
And wipe away her tears?
Will someone answer her questions,
And soothe her endless fears?

ONE SIMPLE JOLT!

Totally unexpected,
Like a sudden inspiration,
There came a spectacular vision,
Expanding and growing beyond all comprehension,
A simple revelation,
A bolt
of lightning
that shook me to my foundation,
All my life I had been waiting
for this recognition
a jolt,
jump starting my imagination
taking me out of my doldrums
past all the writers’ blocks,
all the hindrances that could impede my progress.
one simple jolt.
But after all I’ve tried
I’m back to square one.
My brain is fried.

COLONOSCOPY

COLONOSCOPY
My body is playing tricks again,
And it’s driving me insane.
I’m tired of all the drama,
And tired of all the pain.
My doctor’s appointment is scheduled,
It would be sad if I should miss,
Especially if the doctor shouts,
“Hey, everyone! Come and look at this!”
I understand it’s not fun and games
To get a colonoscopy,
It might be fun for someone else,
But it’s not much fun for me!
Nothing to eat but an awful drink,
What could possibly be any sadder?
Oops! It’s time to go!
The drink affects my bladder!
Doctor, just check me out,
The procedure is long overdue.
Which way are you going in,
To get the scenic view?
You’ve done this procedure numerous times,
Please be gentle and not rough.
The nurses have prepped me up,
So, doc, do your stuff!

First Friday

How could there be a First Friday?
Every week had a Friday,
Just one Friday to focus on,
One Friday to make plans for fun.
Nothing different about one day
Except perceptions about a time to pray.
Why would one Friday suffice
As a day for sacrifice?
A First Friday to meditate
And see control as more than fate.

WHY DO YOU SAY THAT?

Cranky? Don’t accuse me of something
When I come into the room.
I haven’t had my coffee,
And I’ve heard the voice of doom.
I’m not sure I’ll wake up tomorrow
And maybe I won’t last today
So don’t accuse me of being cranky
And keep everyone out of my way.
My hair is falling out
My cough is getting worse,
Why are you asking questions?
Is this poetry time, rhyme and verse?
My car wouldn’t start,
I must have walked a mile,
So get out of my face.
I don’t have time for a smile.
I think there’s a problem,
This company is operating at a loss,
I can’t put my finger on it
Even though I’m the boss.
Taxes are higher and overdue,
Cranky? I don’t think that’s true
Just because one of our clients
Is saying he will sue.
The sun must be on vacation,
You’re the one who was at the door
I was minding my own business,
I don’t want to hear anymore.

NOW, THEN, OR WHEN?

It’s hard to keep topics timely.
Whatever I say or do,
Is often out of view.
What was said yesterday,
Is swallowed up by today.
Forgotten. Pushed aside. Covered up.
Two hundred girls, chemicals used,
A murder in our town,
What does timely mean
If we ignore what’s going down?
There’s not much we can do
If we only sit and stew.
How can we write with pride
If important things are set aside?
We have to be timely.
